JK Inside 950x350

Junior Kindergarten & Kindergarten make up our Early Childhood program.

Preschool & Junior Kindergarten

St. Athanasius School is proud to offer a full-day preschool for 3-year-old children and a full-day junior kindergarten (JK) for 4-year-old children. Featuring a developmentally appropriate balance of physical, social, academic and imaginative play activities in a weekly theme-based curriculum, children are nurtured within a loving Catholic community.

Components of the program include meaningful play and transitions, multi-sensory experiences, and beginning academics in the areas of literacy and math. Students have regular opportunities for gross motor activity and access to technology. A rest time is in place for full-day students. Four-year-old students leaving half day have the opportunity to participate in an extended “lunch bunch” with enrichment activities.

Staffed by both a full-time teacher and teacher’s aide, families have the option of choosing a combination of full and/or half days for 3 & 4-year-olds. Students can attend 2-5 days per week (based on what works for the child). Class size is limited to twenty students, and children of all faiths are welcome. Optional before- and after-school care, and tuition assistance, are available.

  • Two classrooms (3's & 4's) with up to 20 children, led by one teacher and one aide
  • 2 to 5 days available; for 3-year-olds who are 3 by September 1 and 4-year-olds
  • Optional Lunch Bunch for half-day students who want to stay for lunch
  • Students in the 4's JK room must be fully potty trained prior to the first day of school

Kindergarten

Children continue to explore and manage social interactions with friends guided by an experienced teacher and an aide. Our kindergarten program takes place in an engaging self-contained classroom; it develops early learning in the areas of reading, writing, math and exploratory science, while still anchored in play.

Extending our whole-child approach, our young students participate in art, physical education, music, beginning French and Spanish, and religion. They also interact with computers and technology and immerse in our extensive in-class library.

To encourage children to get excited about the larger school around them, we pair each with a seventh-grade big brother or sister. The pairs interact and play together during holidays and school celebrations — a beloved St. A’s tradition.

  • One classroom with up to 20 students, led by one teacher and one aide
  • Full-day program; for children who are 5 by September 1

NEW — Redhawk Room for Parents & Toddlers

This class gives parents and guardians a chance to play and interact with their child in an exploratory classroom environment. It also provides an opportunity for parents and caregivers to meet and connect. The class is structured around emotionally-supported sensory play, so a parent or guardian attends with their child.

  • One classroom with up to 10 toddlers, led by a volunteer teacher and a parent volunteer
  • Each thematic class includes exploration, process art, story time, movement and music
  • Wednesday mornings; for children 18 months to 3 years

These programs prepare our young students for a smooth transition to our Unit System.
