St. Athanasius students consistently achieve standardized class test scores in the top 10% of the nation.


Highlights of Our Curriculum
  • Focuses on math. University of Chicago Everyday Math from K-6 and leveled math classes from 6-8; math coursework is taught by specialists in 6-8; students with aptitude are prepared for an opportunity to take high school geometry in eighth grade.
  • Uses a balanced reading-writing approach to ensure students “learn-to-read” and transition to “read-to-learn” in the elementary grades. Establishes literacy foundation in grades K-4; moves to more difficult, content-rich materials in grades 5-8.
  • Emphasizes religion and spiritual growth through Catholic scripture, tradition, prayer, and participation in liturgy and sacraments; introduces students to other religious traditions.
  • Fosters civic engagement across all grade levels through current events, discussions related to social justice, and community service involvement.
  • Offers a dynamic visual arts program including art production, history and criticism from K-8.
  • Offers extensive music education in rhythm, composition, melody, expression, harmony and music heritage from K-8. Performing arts include choir, band and on-site private lessons.
  • Provides French and Spanish language from K-8. As high school freshmen, most St. A’s graduates place into 2nd year French and Spanish — many place into 2nd year honors French and Spanish.
  • Integrates hands-on science with standards-based instruction from K-8. From 5-8 experiments focus on earth, physical and life sciences. Junior High students take an experiential approach to concepts such as buoyancy, friction, volume, density and chemical reactions, dissections and chemical experiments.
  • Introduces social studies in K-2 (i.e. study of families, local community, citizenship); moves to U.S. government, history and climate from 3-6; and culminates in grades 7-8 with U.S. and World History, democracy and cultural diversity.
  • Benefits from a 10,000 volume library and a modern technology lab.
  • Integrates leading-edge technology into teaching and learning through interactive white boards, iPads, desktop and laptop Apple computers.
  • Promotes physical education and emotional well-being through movement, teamwork, competition and fair play.
  • Promotes health such as sound nutritional choices, positive lifestyle habits and peer relationships, disease prevention, and alcohol and drug abuse prevention in middle school.
  • Incorporates service to enhance an understanding of community, charity and social justice while assisting local, national and international causes.
  • Gives opportunities for students in middle grades to mentor students in junior kindergarten and primary school through big brother/big sister pairings and reading buddy programs.
  • Provides student leadership opportunities in academics and in 20+ co-curricular activities.
  • Teaches interpersonal skills, counteracts bullying and builds community.

Our Students won gold and silver at the State Science Fair in 2015, 2016 & 2017, and received the regional Top School Award at the Illinois Junior Academy of Science (IJAS) Expos in 2015 & 2016.

Students also earn high marks on the National French Test, and benefit from small class sizes (10:1 teacher-student ratio).
